Put Into Practice- The Perceptual Process
The other night I had the opportunity to go and play some river volley ball out in Washington, this spot in the river is easily one of the most popular skim boarding spots that you could find. Because it is very accessible, and almost always has perfect runs in shallow water to get the most out of your skim boarding experience. I was quite surprised that I was going to this spot in the river to do something besides skim board, I felt bad for the boarders already there who couldn't use a large space cause of our volley ball nets that had been set up. Although that couldn't be helped, we all showed up and were ready to play! as I took my place on my volley ball team, my teammates started introducing themselves to me. This is where my experience with the perceptual process began to present itself.
Step one: Sensation. When Emily, and Amy first introduced themselves to me, I couldn't help but notice that they looked very similar. They both had Dark Brown hair, hazel colored eyes, and relativiley the same height. After this brief introduction of about four seconds I said to them
"well you two are obviously sisters". They responded by saying that they were cousins, and explained how their moms are twins which is why they looked alike. So I believed them. After all I didn't have any reason not to and typically people don't question what people say while introducing themselves.
As the night activities progressed I began to move into the second step of the perceptual process...
Step Two: Organization, they seemed way too closely related...not to mention the more time I spent with them the more they began to look alike. They even mentioned that they lived in the same apartment and began sharing stories of an automobile accident that Amy experienced a while back that Emily said scared the crap out of her. So I began to wonder, finally later on They revealed that they weren't cousins, but that they are actually Identical twins! I felt like an idiot that I didn't realze the obvious and I fell victim to their shenanigans. I guess that had already been accustomed to their inside joke of tricking people to believing they were cousins instead saying they were twins in the beginning... and I fell victim to their little ploy. This then became part of my own social experiment, and the third step in the process interpretation.
Step Three: Interpretation, this is where I began to use some critical thinking. you hear it all the time that out of every set of twins. There is one more funny or out-going than the other, or one that tends to by more shy and reserved. I suppose that they have that stereotype that sets them apart about their own distinct personalities. I Then began to observe to see who was who. which led me to the final step in the Perceptual process which is evaluation.
Step Four: Evaluation, However my evaluation of these two sisters was incorrect at first which is why the final step of evaluation can be seen as judgment, because based on all the previous steps you come up with your reasoning or decision. at first I thought it was Emily who was the talkative outgoing twin, but then I soon realized that I was wrong when I began to talk with Amy a little bit more. It became clear to me that she was definitely more talkative and outgoing. so with the perceptual process you have to be able to organize and gather correct information before your interpretation of the situation leads you to assume and maybe judge someone unfairly . the perceptual process is something that we are doing all the time. But I see why it is important to explore more information before we make a hasty decision to evaluate someone's character.
